GREEN CHAMBER: Alternative Needed To U.S. Chamber of Commerce
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has come under fierce criticism for its opposition to environmental protection, its massive campaign contributions to candidates who are decidedly non-green, and its pledge to litigate against financial reform.
The U.S. Chamber has launched numerous attacks on environmental legislation as they oppose any move to support a more progressive energy policy. The Chamber’s opposition to congressional measures to reduce global warming has even led some large corporations to withdraw their memberships, including Pacific Gas and Electric, Exelon Corporation, and Apple, while Nike resigned from its board of directors.
It is clear that U.S. Chamber’s policies not only sabotage environmental protection, but do not accurately represent the interests of many businesses. Large corporations who have embraced corporate social responsibility are separating themselves from the U.S. Chamber.
Fortunately, there are many strong voice that are rising up to counter this antiquated view on business: one of these voices is the Green Chamber of Commerce, which challenges outdated and discredited opposition to business and the environment. The Green Chamber believes that environmental responsibility and sound business practice are not only compatible, but that green business is good business. With this premise, the Green Chamber supports public policies that encourage green business.
The Green Chamber embraces the “triple bottom line” of “people, planet, profit.” The idea is that business should provide for human and environmental needs with the goal of stimulating economic development.
If you are disappointed with the U.S. Chamber’s longstanding opposition to better environmental policy, consider joining the Green Chamber of Commerce.
Sincerely,
Janet Pomeroy
2010- 2011 President, Green Chamber of Commerce
